Tell us about yourself and family

My name is Ruthy Penner and I’m the owner and designer of Nooks Footwear.  My partner and I live in sunny Kelowna, BC with our 2 year old daughter Anouk.  Being a stay-at-home mom means that I operate my home-based studio mostly in the evenings and weekends, but I still get to drop off parcels for customers at the post office and go thrift store shopping for materials during the day with my daughter.  Finding work-life balance is always challenging, but with the help of a great team and my partner who helps me out with marketing and communications, we’ve been able to find success in the first year of operation and there’s no sign of slowing down!  Even though sleep may be getting compromised in trying to do it all, there’s no better feeling than doing what I love and feel passionate about.

Describe your business/product or service

Nooks Footwear is committed to creating and producing handmade, high-quality upcycled booties made from natural materials that are locally-sourced.  Whether picking up a pair of slip-ons or a pair with a Velcro flap closure, a lingerie-quality elastic built into the ankle of the booties gently holds them in place.   Additional unique features such as antique buttons, shells and felted wool hearts are used to add even more style and flair.

These booties are unique not only for their design and style, but also because the use of recycled materials means that no two pairs are alike.  Ranging from size 0 (newborn) up to size 13US men’s, we’ve got something for everyone.

How long have you been in business?

I started creating the first pairs of Nooks booties in December 2012, but only started selling them to the public in Spring 2013 at the Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market.

Why did you start the business?

Nooks Footwear began with a visit to Kelowna’s downtown thrift stores on a cold December day where there happened to be an abundance of outdated wool sweaters; I knew I could re-use them to make some great new items. Patterns for baby booties were soon developed and the first pair of natural fibre, up-cycled Nooks booties were on my daughter’s feet, keeping her cozy. Friends showed interest in also having natural, stylish and unique footwear for their children that would be easy to put on and would stay on.

Tell us why all parents need to visit your store or purchase your product/service

When looking for a baby shower gift, it’s oftentimes challenging to think outside of the box and to offer something unique and memorable, as well as something that is both fashionable and functional; Nooks booties offer all of these things, plus a very reasonable price tag.  Once the little ones have them on their feet, we find that parents are often interested in getting a pair made for themselves too!

Nooks Footwear is not only an eco-friendly upcycled and handmade product, but the booties are made from locally-sourced materials and the company only employs locals to help with material cutting and sewing.

Describe a feature product or promotion you have going on (or coming up)?

Apart from participating in the Kelowna Farmers’/Crafters’ Market on a regular basis, I also do giveaways through my Instagram page.  With the warm Okanagan summer a few months away, I have been working hard on developing not only booties made from lighter materials, but also vintage-inspried dresses made by hand using recycled materials.  One dress is posted every day on Instagram and is up for grabs…they don’t usually last long!
