About Christy

Summer 2012 318

Christy Phillips is a full-time mom of two boys aged 2.5 and 4 years old, a Certified HypnoBirthing Practitioner and the owner of Born to Birth in Kelowna.  Recently trained through Douglas College to become a Breastfeeding Counsellor, she is now thinking of calling her business Born To Birth & Breastfeed!  Christy is also working in partnership with Sara Spada of Birth Kelowna to help facilitate the upcoming Birth Lounge gatherings, and also works from time-to-time as a Parent Educator at the Bridge Youth & Family Services.
Originally from Vancouver, but with family roots and summers in Naramata too, Christy’s love of teaching began after becoming a Level II Snowboarding Instructor in Whistler on weekends while working on her BA in Communication at Simon Fraser University.
Upon graduation in 2000, her natural passion for people, recreation, and wellness lead her to work in various outdoor recreation program capacities, including teaching sailing in modified boats to adults and children with spinal cord injuries in Penticton.  Later, she worked as an Advertising Consultant for a major publisher of outdoor adventure magazines, dabbling in writing and program administration as well, which lead her to The Canadian Cancer Society and fulfilling experiences working on their direct-mail fundraising campaigns.
After meeting and marrying her charming Scottish husband and heading for “The Highlands” with him in 2006 she found work at NHS Health Scotland in their Publishing department and learned much about the prevention of diseases and other conditions you don’t want!  At this time Christy was thrilled to become pregnant for the first time.  Her passion for babies and birthing comes from personal experience.
With a hospital birth in mind, Christy and her husband enrolled in the HypnoBirthing course to educate themselves about the birthing process, to look forward to their first birth experience without fear, and to learn how to ‘own’ their birth by making informed choices so they could have the natural birth Christy wanted and avoid unnecessary interventions and meddling.  After completing the course at 34 weeks pregnant, Christy was so empowered by what she learned she was absolutely confident that she could birth safely and comfortably at home in their third-floor flat in Edinburgh – which she did!  Two years later, and with her family now back in Canada, she still hadn’t stopped talking to everyone and anyone about her exhilarating experience, and her enthusiasm only grew to new heights after another blissful waterbirth at home in Kelowna for her second son Oliver in 2010.
She realized her calling and took the opportunity when it came to train as a Certified HypnoBirthing Childbirth Educator (HBCE) under the founder of the program herself ‘Mickey’ Mongan in 2010, and right away began teaching her first classes to the families of the Westbank First Nation, where she had been working on a temporary basis.
More than two years later, Christy is thrilled to be teaching this easier, relaxed, more comfortable and responsible method of birthing to expecting moms, dads, and the Doulas of the Okanagan, and is now offering breastfeeding education and support too!

Christy is also interested in one day pursuing Hypnotherapy training and delving into the wonders of HypnoFertility.  So stay tuned 😉
